LG, Nintendo may use pressure sensitive touchscreens this year

One of the next big steps forward for touchscreen technology is creating a solid solution for gauging pressure rather than just touch, and doing so in such a way that it is cheap enough to be commercially viable in the gadgets we use everyday.

Such a pressure sensitive touchscreen may appear in consumer gadgets this year due to a new $1.4 million deal done between UK company Peratech Limited and Japanese display company Nissha.

Peratech has developed technology that allows for a pressure-sensing touchscreen to be created using a very thin and power efficient extra layer added to a touchscreen. It is called Quantum Tunneling Composite (QTC) and consists of two conductors separated by an insulating barrier.

Touch pressure makes the electrons on the two layers jump towards each other while the insulator keeps them separated. The coming together allows for pressure to be measured and sensors at the edge of the screen pick up very slight changes in the bend of the display (2 micrometers). What you end up with is a very accurate pressure sensor from this QTC layer that is just 75 micrometers thick. It also only uses power when pressure is being applied suggesting it will have very little impact on battery drain.

The significance of Nissha licensing QTC technology is due to the companies it supplies. Both LG and Nintendo are customers suggesting pressure-sensing touchscreens could be in both company’s futures. The licensing agreement Nissha has signed allows it to use QTC in screens smaller than 3.5 x 5.5 inches making this purely for mobile devices to begin with.

These new touchscreens may appear sooner than we think too, as Peratech’s CEO Philip Taysom says April this year should see the first device released using his company’s tech.

Panasonic VIERA G2 and S2 1080p plasma panels go on sale in February

Panasonic has let everybody interested know specifications of the VIERA G2 and S2 1080p plasma HDTVs coming out into mass availability on February 5th. Both, G2 and S2 series, represent steady improvement over current plasma technology sold under G1 series. Panasonic has equipped G2 and S2 with different sorts of panels so they have a bit different image quality and therefore price tags. the smallest and less techy 42" S2 will be available for 2,100 dollars while the biggest and the best 50" G2 will set you 3,530 dollars back.

In the meanwhile, price difference between equally sized G2 and S2 is a lot less considerable and that's weired because technological gap between them is. Let me explain: Panasonic engineers have designed a beautiful PDP Black panel technology for plasma TVs. PDP is lead-free and outputs 5,000,000 : 1 contrast ratio. VIEARA G2 has it, but S2 doesn't. It is unclear whether S2 has PDP at all, but 2,000,000 : 1 contrast is a nuisance next a G2.

Differences between VIEARA ranges doesn't stop here. G2 is also better equipped. It has three HDMI connectors, four D4s, Ethernet, VGA. S2 has VGA only. Available sizes are 42", 46" and G2 only 50". My opinion here is that cheapest G2 will do better than the biggest S2.

Acer netbook with Chrome OS

Acer's plans for 2010 are no longer a secret. Apart from notebooks and the rest of the stuff we got used to see from Acer, they are working on an e-book reader, a tablet computer, an app store and Chrome OS ready netbooks. We can't wait for all of this lot. Now though we can tie our impatience with some new facts extracted from Jim Wong's recent interview. Most of Acer goodies, as it turns out, will be available in the second half of 2010. More specifically, Chrome OS netbooks will start shipping in early Q3 waiting for the operating system to come out. Acer plans to sell one million of netbooks by the end of the year. This number is calculated from average expected sales percentage form the total amount of Acer computers sales, so it should be pretty close. One million sounds realistic to me as long as they keep prices below Windows 7 Starter enabled netbooks. And this is very probable though we can't say for sure because hardware in use is unknown.

Watch DVD and video on your new Motorola mobile phone: CLIQ, Droid

This article is about how to convert DVDs and Videos to Motorola Droid, Motorola CLIQ for watching DVD movies and videos like YouTube video, home video etc. on your new Motorola mobile phone: CLIQ, Droid.

First of all, introduce some background of the two new Motorola mobile phone: CLIQ, Droid. For the declining aristocracy MOTOROLA, any small profit has belongs to rare good. So when the company recently posted surprise third-quarter profits, Motorola stuffs are filled with happy. Namely the MOTOROLA finally successfully achieved the quarter profit. MOTOROLA has revealed the company is expected to launch less mobile phone in the fourth quarter of the year, this basically to get rid of some "cannot profit" failure. So, armed with Cliq, Droid and the MotoBlur interface, it just might be a new day for Motorola.

I think both mobile phones are good! With the functions of mobile are more and more powerful. The selection criteria for mobile phones are also different. As for me, I like watching movie and listening to music on phone, so I have a more attention on this aspect. Both these Moto phones are built-in media player. In CLIQ, I'll find album art, playlists, shuffle, repeat, and an airplane mode for in-flight media use. The interface is simple, but easy to navigate and the player supports several file formats, such as: video formats: H.264, H.263, MPEG 4, YouTube, MPEG 4, 3GP and audio formats: AAC, MP3, WAV, MIDI, AMR NB and AAC+. For Droid, there aren't any major enhancements to the player in terms of interface or functionality, which is too bad. You still get support for MP3, AAC, AMR-NB, WAV, MIDI (to name a few), and Windows Media Audio 9 formats and the player includes shuffle, repeat, and playlist creation. You can advance and revisit previous tracks by tapping the forward and back buttons or you can swipe the album covers using the touch screen. They are good Multimedia phone, but only one, they could support all of video or audio formats.

Smart Robot Greets Visitors

Japan's aging population problem seems to be unique only to that part of the world, although there are some countries that are moving towards that direction. This has spurred the growth of robotic technology and its application in everyday life, with both Shimizu Corp. and Yasukawa Electric opening the "Smart Showroom" that will demonstrate the use of Smart Robots in intelligent buildings. The whole idea is to deploy this robot to roam around, where it will then interact with humans to make their visit more pleasant by answering various questions while providing help onverall. This conceptual robot currently comes with a speech synthesizer, an LCD projector and a maximum travel speed of up to 3.6km/h.

DigitalRise X9 multitouch tablet includes Intel Atom, Windows 7; priced at $780

There’s another tablet on the table: the DigitalRise X9 multitouch-screen tablet has made its way into the fold. With its strong specs, it could be a strong competitor - if it weren’t for the hefty price tag.

With tablets becoming the hot ticket item of the year, DigitalRise has implemented quite a bit beneath that 10.2-inch color TFT touchscreen, including:
Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz processor
Windows 7
160 GB SATA hard drive
2 GB RAM
3000mAh Li-ion battery
GPS
3G
1.3-megapixel webcam
SD/MS/MMC/MS-Pro card reader

But this won’t come cheap: $780, which seems a bit on the expensive side for a tablet. So if this piques your interest, don’t drop it.

LG Display's 19-inch E Ink display plays loose with the truth

Well doesn't that look impressive? A big 'ol 19-inch electronic ink display that appears to emulate your father's newspaper. No doubt, this massive Metal-Foil e-paper prototype from LG Display is impressive at this size (just 0.3-mm thin and 250×400mm -- about the same size as a 297×420-mm sheet of A3) and weight (130 grams). Hell, we were already impressed with the flexible 11.5-inch panel from LG Display found in the Skiff Reader. However, like the rigid Skiff Reader, a flexible panel doesn't mean that we'll be seeing a flexible e-reader. In fact, chances are we won't after the manufacturer gets through adding a touchscreen overlay, application processor, and radio chipset. Let's hope for a surprise though, whenever these panels do make it out for mass production... assuming anyone still cares about monochrome E Ink displays by then.

Silent and eco-friendly concept mower for the future

Husqvarna, the global leader of outdoor power products, has developed a quiet, powerful and environmentally friendly ride-on mower for the future garden. The concept mower, developed by Husqvarna's designers and engineers, is made of recycled materials and gives an indication how the future of mowing might come to look.

-Husqvarna Panthera Leo™ demonstrates our innovation capacity and ambition to develop high performing products with less environmental impact, says Magnus Yngen, President and CEO of Husqvarna.

Husqvarna Panthera Leo™ is a hybrid made up of two ride-on mowers, Rider and Zero-Turn. A battery that can be charged at any electrical outlet has replaced the traditional gas engine. Five powerful electrical motors partnered with a sound absorbing cutting deck, allow the Husqvarna Panthera Leo™ to glide effortlessly and silently across your lawn. The tree individually suspended cutting decks enables this mower to mow smoothly over bumpier parts of your garden, avoiding lawn scalping. The cutting decks each have razor sharp blades for a close cut finish and can be controlled to suit wide or narrow lawns (from 85cm up to 120cm).

All functions and are managed via paddles on the steering wheel. Via an LCD-display gardeners are told everything they need to know to achieve a perfect lawn, from how fast they are driving, cutting height, cutting width, remaining battery time, service needs and warns the user about objects that are too close. With the help of sensors, Husqvarna Panthera Leo™ can recommend the most suitable speed and cutting height for the perfect lawn.
